Brief
History of Saint Michael Sports
Club
How Saint Michael
was Born?
We, members of Saint Michael Mahiber
decided to play soccer for fun
at our annual family picnic at
Sandy Point Park in July of 1996
for fun. Most of our mahiber members
grown up playing soccer. Therefore,
it was a moment that brought this
nostalgic memory for everybody.
We were all elated about this
adventure and enthusiastic to
continue it every weekend. So
the TENA BUDIN is started this
way and Saturday was the magic
day selected by everybody and
it is still the main training
day for our club. Saturday is
the day nobody wanted to miss.
Even when there is a layer of
snow, we still play on Saturday.
The tena budin
after two years then was transformed
into a formal soccer club. This
happened at a meeting on August
4th, 1998. At this meeting the
following five individuals were
assigned to lay down the foundation
of the now St. Michael sports
club.
- Getachew
Tesfaye
- Bedru Nuri
- Seifu Beyene
- Melaku
Taye
- Alem Abebe
Among the things
the founding committee discussed
on:
- The objectives and
goals of the club
- The name and Logo
of the club
- Membership criteria
- The number of board
and executive committee
- Organization Structure
and bylaws
- General meeting
and election.
Accordingly,
on August 15th, 1998 the first
executive committee of Saint
Michael Sports Club were elected.
The results were :
- Alem Abebe - President
- Hiruy Nigatu - Vice President
- Ayalew Berye - Secretary

After St. Michael
is established as a club it
attracted so many youngsters
and adults into its family.
We started organizing and participating
in various tournaments. Most
notably the same year it established
as a club St. Michael appears
at the final championship trophy
of Ethio-Saron tournament. This
was very exciting moment for
the club players, members and
fans. Saint Michael starts to
catch the public eye in the
community. 1999 was also a very
glorious year for St. Michael
team locally. We were able to
demonstrate how competitive
and organized we are.
Those two years
inspired the players and the
leadership of the club to join
ESFNA. We started our quest
for ESFNA informally in 1999
and formally in 2000. The whole
process was very long and very
controversial. However after
a relentless struggle and smart
campaign Saint Michael Sports
Club was accepted by ESFNA in
2004 and able to become part
of the larger Ethiopian community.
We are now in the final days
of our preparation to take part
in the ESFNA 2005 Soccer Tournament
in Atlanta in second division
for the first time. This is
our journey in short for the
last 10 years.
We feel pround
to have come so far and continue
our effors to promote and provide
equal opprtunities to members
of our community. |
